　イギリスには11/1から始まるPoppy Appealという募金活動がある。1918年の11/11に第一次世界大戦が終了し、アメリカの国防長官？（War Secretary）がJohn McCrae と言う詩人の詩に感銘を受けて、ポピーの花を売って、復員兵や家族のためにお金を集めようとしたのが始まりだそうだ。その詩は以下の通り。

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

ベルギーのフランダース（フランドル）は第一次世界大戦時に激戦が繰り広げられた場所で、多くの兵士がフランダースの野で亡くなったそうである（ベルギーの博物館でもその当時のフランダースの荒廃ぶりを撮した写真を展示していた）。11月になってから、街中でも小学校でも募金活動をしてポピーの花（造花）を配っていて、胸にさしている人が多い。戦後もイギリスは多くの兵士が亡くなっており、その活動は今も続いている。
　結有が「あのお花欲しい」というので、募金をして花をもらった後、調べてみて知った。
